The government on Wednesday eased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms in the space sector by allowing 100 per cent overseas investment in making components for satellites, as part of efforts to attract overseas players and private companies into the segment. The decision was taken at the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Now, the satellite sub-sector has been divided into three different activities with defined limits for foreign investment in each such sector, according to an official statement. Presently, FDI in the space sector is allowed up to 100 per cent in the area of satellite establishment and operations through government routes only. By changing the current policy, the government has allowed up to 74 per cent FDI under automatic route in satellite-manufacturing and operation, satellite data products, and ground and user segments. Middle income earners are expected to emerge as winners of a tweaked income tax policy to be unveiled by the prime minister in a national address. Anthony Albanese took the proposed changes to a Labor caucus meeting on Wednesday and is expected to walk through a refreshed economic plan at the National Press Club on Thursday. “This afternoon is focused, really concentrating on middle Australia and that’s the advice that we’ve received from Treasury,” Mr Albanese told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday morning. People earning up to $150,000 are expected to receive bigger tax cuts under the controversial plan, while those on higher salaries will receive more modest returns, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. Under the stage three tax cuts as they stand, the 37 per cent marginal tax rate will be scrapped for those earning between $120,000 and $180,000 a year. The 32.5 .....

Changes to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) and the introduction of 60-day prescriptions are working to reduce everyday costs for Australians. On 1 January 2023 the Albanese Government lowered the maximum cost of prescription medications listed on the PBS saving Australians more than $240 million in 2023. Since September 2023, 60-day prescriptions have made selected PBS medicines cheaper for Australians with a range of ongoing stable health conditions, already saving patients over $7.2 million. Almost 2 million 60-day scripts were dispensed between September and December 2023, and with the number of medications available as 60-day scripts set to rise to 300 by September this year the savings will continue to grow. The Albanese Government also reduced the PBS Safety Net Threshold, so more pensioners and concession cardholders get free medicines, sooner. This has red.....

Australia's economy grew just 0.2 per cent over the three months to September 30 and 2.1 per cent over the past year, according to National Accounts data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). Katherine Keenan, ABS head of national accounts, said: “This was the eighth straight rise in quarterly GDP, but growth has slowed over 2023. Government spending and capital investment were the main drivers of GDP growth this quarter.” Government final consumption expenditure rose 1.1 per cent this quarter after a 0.6 per cent increase in the June quarter. “The growth in government expenditure was driven by social benefits to households, including the Energy Bill Relief Fund rebates, and extra payments for childcare, aged care and pharmaceutical products,” Ms Keenan said. Defence also contributed to growth with increased expenditure related to international training exer.....
